Surgery was performed three separate times. Once for an audience and twice solitary. The audience is drawn into the work as active participants celebrating, washing, and lifting alongside the artist transforming the act of witnessing into one of shared responsibility and care. The performance engages pathologization and spectacle of the Black body and reclaiming surgery as a communal, public ritual.
By weaving together dance, call and response, and religious abstraction, the artist constructs a space where identity is not fixed but continually remade through dialogue, resistance, and self-invention. Miss/Mr. Contented Least is an invitation to confront the boundaries between harm and healing, autonomy and interdependence, and to reimagine self determination in a world that too often denies it to Black people.
